SHILLONG: In a tragic incident, two friends are believed to have drowned in the Wahlyngkien Kshaid Demthring river at Sai-Mika Park near Sohra on Saturday evening.

According to an official source, the two friends — Banylla Syiemiong (female, 19) of Mawshabuit and Ronald Sawian (male, 21) from Umpling — had gone to Sai Mika Park and the strong current of the river swept them away.

The body of Banylla, who was doing MBBS in China, has been fished out, while the body of Ronald, who was doing Bsc Agriculture in Allahabad, is yet to be recovered.

Personnel from Meghalaya Fire Service will be pressed into service on Sunday morning to locate the missing body, the source said

It may be recalled that last year, a 25-year-old tourist from Britain — Christina Reed — was swept away while she was swimming in Umkynsan River at Sohra (Cherrapunjee) along with her two friends.
