SHILLONG: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma on Friday asserted that the State Government is in the process of putting in place steps which are more stringer than the Inner Line Permit (ILP) effective in certain Northeastern states to check influx.

“We are trying to put in place a mechanism where people can be mapped in each and every locality,” he said.

Hinting that the ILP is not very effective, the Chief Minister said intruders can still enter a state from several other points since the officials will check the ILP only in certain entry points in the state.

“Illegal migrants would not like to come through such points. They will always find other ways,” he told reporters.

Citing the case of illegal immigrants, he said that they always manage to make their way into the country by crossing the international border despite strong security presence.

“The issued requires a more productive and holistic approach,” Dr Sangma said while adding that it was necessary to reach out to the non -indigenous communities to enable them to become a part of the entire measure.

He also stated that Meghalaya needs to be proactive and farsighted at a time when the neighbouring state of Assam was ‘burning’.
