Guwahati: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on Sunday said violent incidents like the recent clashes in BTAD and Dhubri would continue until the Indo-Bangla border was properly sealed.

“The Centre has failed to live up to its promise of sealing the border even 27 years after the signing of the Assam Accord and incidents of violence and clash will continue if the border remains porous,” AASU President Sankar Prasad Rai and General Secretary Tapan Kumar Gogoi told reporters here.

“The recent violence is not a Bodo-Muslim clash, but a clash between indigenous residents and foreigners and the government must deal with it accordingly,” they said.

“It is indeed a shame that even 27 years after the signing of the Accord, the state is still facing the problem and the governments, both at the centre and the state continue to ignore it,” they said.

The students’ leaders criticised Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi for allegedly rehabilitating infiltrators.

“We cannot give rehabilitation to foreigners’ on Assam’s lands,” they said.

The students’ organisation would burn the effigy of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on Monday and take out a protest rally throughout the state on August 14, they said. (PTI)
