NONGSTOIN: Four West Khasi Hills based NGOs – FKJGP (West Khasi Hills), West Khasi Hills Students’ Union, Khasi Student Union (West Khasi Hills) and the Western Youth Front (WYF) on Wednesday announced to hold office picketing on August 22 and 23.

These four NGOs who are also supported by the Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong Nongstoin Town had earlier extended the deadline for the State Government to come clean on the Nongstoin Urban Water Supply Scheme (NUWSS), but the deadline has come and gone without any response from the Government.

The four NGOs had alleged that the scheme sanctioned was worth Rs 133, 94, 12, 700 but only Rs 16 crore has been released as of now.

This amount, as per the tender floated, exhibited work towards survey, engineering, design, road to pumping station, treatment of water gravity etc.

However, with the stepping in of the new C E, the total projected population of Nongstoin by the year 2045 has been reduced to a meagre 60,000 only, they alleged.

They also alleged that the total amount of Rs 133.94 crore has been reduced.

The C E had replied that the total no of packages in the scheme are eight including the sub packages, they alleged. As of now only one package has been released and the amount for the same amounted to Rs 16 crore.

Recently the NGOs have demanded a list of clarifications and explanations regarding the scheme.

They questioned that if this was the Package I, then what was the total number of packages in the scheme. They also wanted to know the amount for every package and the date when the rest of the packages would be released, but there has been no clarification from the CE till date.

It was also mentioned that a mass rally was organized on Thursday, July 26 at Nongstoin as part of the “Black Flag Day” called by various NGOs of West Khasi Hills- KSU, FKJGP and the Synjuk ki Nongsynshar Shnong and several other village councils from Nongstoin to mark a protest against the irregularities in the Nongstoin Urban Water Supply Scheme (NUWSS), in which this NGO’s and the Synjuk term it as the first step of agitation.
