Guwahati: Army was put on alert in Hailakandi district of southern Assam as bodies of three youths of the district, who were killed by miscreants in a train on Monday, were buried on Tuesday.

DIG (southern range) Binod Kumar told UNI over telephone that the Army has been put on alert and a strict watch was being kept to ensure that no untoward incident occurred.

“The situation is under control,” he added. The bodies of the three youths were brought to their homes in Hailakandi on Tuesday.

The three youths were reportedly assaulted and pushed overboard a train at Jalpaiguri in north Bengal while returning to Guwahati from Bangalore for Eid festivities.

The bodies were buried in presence of large number of mourners.

Ethnic violence in western Assam, which claimed 77 lives and displaced over 4.50 lakh people, had triggered fears of backlash against people of Assam outside the state, particularly in southern India.

Fanned by rumours, thousands of people from North East had fled the southern states and returned to the region.

Though no links has been confirmed between the attacks on youths of NE in trains with the violence in western Assam, these attacks has further fuelled the panic.

Meawhile, a seven-member central team consisting of joint secretaries on Tuesday visited several relief camps in strife-torn Korakrajhar, Chirang and Dhubri districts in lower Assam to take stock of the situation.

Official sources said that the team visited more than 81 relief camps spread over the three districts including those at Bilasipara and Majpara in Dhubri district.

The team took stock of the situation and interacted with the camp inmates. The inmates, the sources said, told the members of the team that there were adequate relief materials.

The team has assured the victims of security and supply adequate food stuff, the sources said. (Agencies)
