TURA: Twelve hours of normalcy was hampered in all five districts of Garo Hills due to the bandh announced by the breakway ANVC (B) on Friday which is asking the GHADC CEM PK Sangma and his deputy, Brigady Marak, to step down over corruption charges. No untoward incidents were reported from any region of Garo Hills during the 12-hour bandh.
In West Garo Hills district the bandh was complete in Tura and other nearby towns including Rongram, Jengjal, Garobadha and Tikrikilla. But the bandh did not have any affect in the plain belt towns of Hallidyganj and Rajabala which had a normal day with all shops and business centres open, school children attending classes and vehicles moving on the roads.
“Even in Phulbari town over 50 per cent of shops were open and people were out on the streets like any normal day,” informed Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi.
In Tura, security was more intense due to threat perception to the GHADC CEM Purno K Sangma by the ANVC (B) which wants him to resign from the post. Government offices were closed except for the DC and SP office which functioned with limited staff.
The bandh was total in North Garo Hills district, East Garo Hills district, south West Garo Hills district and South Garo Hills district with no reports of any law and order incidents.
