SHILLONG: The KSU has questioned the motive of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in limiting the number of MBBS seats allocated to Meghalaya from the Central pool from 57 last year to 56 this year, while expressing suspicion that the 57th seat might have been allotted to one of the wards of the faculty members of NEIGRIHMS.
“We fail to understand why the Central Government should alter the number of seats already allocated to the State pool,” KSU president Daniel Khyriem said here on Monday.
Suspecting that the missing seat might have been allotted to one of the wards of the faculty members of NEIGRIHMS, Khyriem said, “All this while we were made to believe that the State Government has revoked the order on the reservation of two seats for wards of NEIGRIHMS faculties but the allocation of one less seat points speaks otherwise.”
It may be noted that there was only one application for the two reserved MBBS seats allotted by the Union Ministry for the wards of the faculties of NEIGRIHMS from the State quota, however, the candidate’s name did not appear in the final list of candidates who were awarded the MBBS and BDS seats.
“The candidate’s name might not have appeared in the list of successful candidates but we suspect that everything has been done unofficially to avoid controversy,” the KSU president alleged while sticking to his claim that the ‘disappearance’ of a seat was a Government game-plan to ensure a seat for the ward of the NEIGRIHMS faculty.
Stating that 56 seats is insufficient to meet the needs of aspiring MBBS students of the State, Khyriem demanded an immediate clarification on the disappearance of the 57th seat.
The Union also threatened that if the Government failed to respond to their call, they would be compelled to call for agitation.
