SHILLONG: Leaders of various prominent NGOs of the State including the KSU, FKJGP, HNYF and CSWO on Monday apprised the BJP central leadership on the frequent attacks and harassment against the people from the Northeastern region in mainland India, while also raising the issue of illegal immigration which has affecting the whole of the region.

Talking to newspersons after a meeting between the NGOs leaders and members of the BJP Goodwill Mission to the State on Monday, NESO leader Samuel Jyrwa said they have asked the BJP central leadership to ensure the safety and security of the students and professional from the State who are studying or working in various parts of the country.

“We have apprised the BJP leaders about the frequent attacks and harassment being meted to our people in mainland India,” the former KSU president said.

“We have also told the BJP leaders that the clash which had taken place in areas under the Bodo Territorial Council in Assam was a fight against influx. It was never an attack against any particular community,” the NESO leader said.

The NGOs have also brought to the notice of the BJP central leadership the decision of the State Government to abide by the Election Commission directive to carry out rampant voters’ enrollment drive in the State without taking into account the effects it might have on the local indigenous population.

“We have also impressed upon them that the 1950 Indo-Nepal Treaty should not be applicable in the State, since it has facilitated migration of thousands of people from Nepal into the State without any valid documents,” the NESO leader informed.

“We have been asked by the BJP leaders to submit a formal representation on all the issues we had raised. We have been assured that the party would take up the various issues at various platforms including the Parliament,” Jyrwa added.
