Shillong: Maintaining that delivery of health care facilities in the city is still far from being satisfactory, a new urban health care centre was on Saturday inaugurated at Jaiaw Langsning by Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh.
Jaiaw Langsning is among the few localities in the city selected to set up the urban health care centre making it the 12th such centre to function in the city.
Stressing on the fact that the number of primary health care centres in the city is very less, medical health officer Dr DK Nongbri said “We want this centre to be a primary health care centre to cater to the needs of the poor and the underprivileged lot”.
Dr Nongbri also briefed on the expectations of setting up this centre saying that they are looking forward to achieve equitable service, community participation, convergence with different departments and appropriate technology.
He further highlighted on the services made available in an urban health care centre stating that curative and preventive aspects which are provided are very important besides youth counselling units.
“Our aim is to reduce the high infant mortality rate and maternal mortality rate in the city and state as a whole”, the medical health officer said adding that a healthy society can only emerge if these ratios are being brought down.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills, Sanjay Goyal also stressed on purposes of a health care centre stating that the aim is to bring the health administration close to the society.
Stating that immunisation level in the state is far from satisfactory, Goyal said that the state has not yet achieve a desired immunisation level as expected and the even the figures are not up to the national level.
Apart from rural areas, the DC said that “Even in the urban areas, the immunisation level is not up to the mark and the figures are not encouraging at all. This dismal figure is coupled with the social issues that come in the way of ensuring better health care to the society”, he said.
The urban health care centre will be manned by medical health officers besides staffs making it a total of 15 staffs altogether.
Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, urban affairs minister Ampareen Lyngdoh called upon the people to avail the services provided by these centres besides sustaining and maintaining the health care centres.
“The presence of an urban health care centre is a great boon to the society especially the underprivileged section of the society”, she said.
The gathering was also attended by the Rangbah Shnong of Jaiaw Langsning DO Rynjah besides government doctors, staffs and local residents.
