SHILLONG: The aviation company Alliance Air is yet to withdraw its operations in the State even as the North Eastern Council (NEC) has called off its agreement with the firm since December last.
A day after the NEC accused Alliance Air of pocketing a hefty amount of Rs 49 crore despite failing in its commitment of providing quality air services in the northeastern region, a senior government official informed that the aviation company is still continuing with its services from the Shillong Airport.
“They (Alliance Air) have flights taking off from the airport six days a week except on Friday. As per the information, the aviation company is carrying out the services on its own following the decision of the NEC to withdraw the funding,” the official informed.
After entering into an agreement with Alliance Air in 2001, the NEC had been providing financial support to the aviation company in terms of huge subsidies to ensure that the firm does not run at a loss since there are only a few passengers travelling by air in this part of the country.
However, anomalies in the services prompted the NEC to withdraw its agreement.
