SHILLONG: The BJP will put up a candidate from Pynthorumkhrah constituency, which is currently represented by GAD Minister and Congress member AL Hek.

BJP general secretary Dipayan Chakraborty told The Shillong Times on Thursday that despite the setback to the party after the lone BJP legislator Hek joined the Congress party in 2009, Meghalaya BJP was preparing in full swing for the coming Assembly elections.

Hek, who was consecutively elected thrice from Pynthorumkhrah constituency on a BJP ticket, was the image of the BJP in Meghalaya till he joined the Congress.

“We are trying to put up a candidate who can give better service to the people of Pynthorumkhrah,” he said.

The BJP secured three seats in the 1998 Assembly elections, but remained unrepresented after Hek joined the Congress without relinquishing the Pynthorumkhrah seat, Chakraborty said.

The BJP is confident of sending representatives again to the State Legislative Assembly by winning a number of seats, the BJP leader said.

“Many prominent leaders have joined the party and they are interested in contesting the polls. But we have asked them to work hard as we want the best candidates so that the people can be proud of their elected representatives,” Chakraborty said.

Though there is slow pace as far as the election related activities on the part of BJP is concerned, the party general secretary said that the state BJP was preparing the ground works to face the polls.

According to Chakraborty, blocks are now quite strong to face the elections and the blocks will duly give importance to those capable candidates who can win the elections.

“We are a national party. After receiving recommendation from the block, the State Election

Committee will give its recommendation to the party at the Centre for consideration.

The declaration of candidates will be by the Central leaders, Chakraborty said, adding that the state Election Committee will shortly start the process of selection of candidates.

On pre poll alliance with likeminded parties, Chakraborty said that the party high command will take a final decision in this regard.
