IMPHAL: The Centre for Organisation and Research and Education (CORE) has expressed concern over the state Government’s failure to take up rehabilitation and resettlement programme for the families and children who had been evicted from Lamphelpat Yaipha Leikai, Imphal West on June 6, 2012.

A statement of CORE said it concerns about the current status of the affected villages especially women, children and elderly people with respect to their access to shelter, clean water, sanitation and education, alleging that the undemocratic and inhumane practices of the state Government amounts to clear violation of their basic human rights.

Unfortunately, Manipur State Women Commission has turned down the complaint of the affected women of Lamphel Yaipha Leikai, CORE informed and it really feels sorry to see the ineffective response to the memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister of Manipur for necessary actions, saying the state has no State Commission on the rights of children and at the same time the Manipur Human Rights Commission has remained non-functional.

It is evident that the state Government is insensitive and lacks human rights approach towards the affected people when eviction and other forms of untold misery to the people are brought about in the name of development and the innocent people are made to pay the price of so-called development taken up for them, the statement further added.

It also said CORE strongly urges the state Government to ensure proper and transparent process of law while eviction and other development projects are implemented in the state including free, prior and informed consent of affected and indigenous peoples of Manipur and avoid all forms of arbitrary impacts on them.

It also urged the Government to ensure immediate rehabilitation and resettlement of the evicted families from Lamphel Yaipha Leikai for development of National Information and Technology. (NNN)
