Of speakers with verbal diarrhea
In a birth anniversary celebration of a spiritual leader in the city recently, an invited special guest from Chattisgarh made an opening remark that the Meghalaya governor reminded him of the his Chattisgarh counterpart; both are handsome men he said. On hearing this Governor Mooshahary self consciously tidied himself.
Then the special guest addressed RG Lyngdoh, who was also an invitee to the celebration and said the moment he met him before the function, Lyngdoh and he became like long lost friends.
When Lyngdoh’s turn to speak came he said he didn’t know how to address the special guest, “My old new friend or my new old friend” was what the witty RG said.
However, the special guest soon took advantage of the situation and went on speaking. The Governor was scheduled to speak after him. From the body language of the dignitaries and the audience it was evident that they were bored with the man’s meandering speech.
Finally when Governor Mooshahary realized that the special guest was going on and on he asked a member of the organizing committee to stop the special guest in his tracks.
The compere quickly passed him a slip asking him to wind up his speech but to n o avail. This left the VIP aghast. But sensing the tension in the room the special guest winded up his speech saying he wanted to say more but time was the constraining factor. Talk about verbal diarrhea!
Truncated Assembly session
One of the advantages of short assembly session is that the legislators are not bored or sleepy.
The recently concluded autumn session of the state assembly was perhaps the shortest ever But the MLAs seem energized because time was short but the issues were manifold. However, some things never change.
All the questions raised by the opposition members were countered by Dr Mukul Sangma. Besides them, as usual only about 10 legislators were seen and heard answering or asking questions.
The others were silent listeners with their earphones on. How is the public to know that the MLAs were not listening to their favourite music?
For, what’s the point of being a representative if an MLA does not speak in the House?
Election 2013
The groundwork for 2013 has begun.
Aspiring politicians who are eyeing new constituencies or want to retain their old ones are doing everything to woo the voters.
Recently, a contestant visited a temple in a certain locality where the chief priest was apprising the devotees about Sri Krishna.
The aspiring MLA with some followers entered the temple and sat there for a while.
They even danced and sang in their own inimitable style to the tune of “Hare Rama! Hare Krishna”.
That was quite a sight and one that’s hard to witness except during election time only when people are made to do weird things.
The aspiring MLA later met the locality elders and the headman and assured that a particular lane in the locality, which was topped last time during British India, would see a fresh topping if he is elected.
The aspiring MLA also promised them many more things, as if making roads and lanes is not the responsibility of the government but a patronage.
Failed acceleration
With the city reeling under intense traffic jam for the past few days, a SPTS was guilty of adding agony to the existing order of things.
The driver parked the bus at he Mothphran point causing huge traffic jam in the area.
Irked by this, a traffic cop issued a summon slip to the driver and handyman.
However, the adventure-struck handyman tore away the slip as his partner in crime, the driver, drove from the scene hoping to zoom across the city roads at lightning speed.
Little did he know it would have been wiser to run given the ‘lubricant less’ flow of traffic in the city.
As expected, the bus was intercepted at Barik Point and the driver along with the conductor arrested.
