SHILLONG: With the tenure of the present DGP, N. Ramachandran ending on October 31, the process to find his successor has already started.
The State government appointed Ramachandran as the new DGP on September 27 last year.
Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh said that the state security commission would meet soon to discuss the names of probable candidates.
The commission will prepare a panel of five names for the consideration of the Government, he added.
The senior most among the candidates for consideration for the post of next DGP is the present DG (prisons) Kulbir Krishan ( 1976 batch ) followed by Director General of Home Guards from Assam, Subhash Goswami , Meghalaya Director General of Civil Defence and Home Guards, Prem Singh,( both 1977 batch), B. Kezo, DG (prisons ), Nagaland (1978 batch) , DK Pathak ADG training, CRPF posted in Delhi and PJP Hanman (1979 batch), brother of Assembly Speaker Charles Pyngrope.
Sources said that earlier the Government was keen to bring in Hanman who is currently posted in Nepal.
Since Pyngrope and his son will be contesting the Assembly elections, the Election Commission is likely to reject the appointment of Hanman.
Sources also said that despite the request from several quarters, the Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma is not keen on Hanman.
Though the state security commission last year had shortlisted the name of Krishan , he was not considered for the post.
Krishan, the senior most among the probables, has the tenure of more than two years.
Krishan had once served as the Meghalaya DGP when the Dr Donkupar Roy-led MPA government was in power.
Sources said Kezo, who is currently serving in Nagaland, is keen to return to Meghalaya and this will mean that he may be also considered for the post of next police chief. Kezo had served as the acting DGP of Meghalaya in the past.
There are reports that the Government may give extension to the present DGP.
However, the State government can give extension only for a period of three months which would mean that the government will have to still appoint a new DGP after three months.
