SHILLONG: Under the Central government’s scheme of Basic Services to Urban Poor (BSUP), five slums of Shillong have been selected for upgradation.
The selected slums are Mawbah, Demseniong, Lower Mawprem, Pyntohrumkhrah and Kynjatphutbol.
Informing this here on Thursday, Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said that the total project cost has been estimated Rs 2129.73 lakh of which the Centre’s share will be Rs 1658.05 lakh. The rest will to borne by the state government.
Under the scheme, altogether 168 dwelling units will be constructed while the construction of 48 units has already begun in lower Mawprem, she said adding “The remaining 120 dwelling units would be constructed depending on the availability of land.”
The government is expecting to complete the implementation of the scheme by the end of 2013.
The Scheme is being implemented by Meghalaya Urban Development Authority (MUDA), which is the designated nodal agency at the State level.
The main thrust of the BSUP is focused on integrated development of slums through projects for providing shelter, basic services and other related civic amenities with a view to provide utilities to urban poor.
The ever increasing number of slum dwellers causes tremendous pressure on urban basic services and infrastructure. In order to cope with massive problems that have emerged as a result of rapid urban growth, Government of India launched this project in selected cities on mission mode.
When asked about the selection of beneficiaries, the Minister said a Detailed project Report has been prepared and the department is currently verifying the names of the beneficiaries.
On completion of the project, beneficiaries identified from the locality will be rehabilitated in those dwelling units, she added.
