SHILLONG: In yet another case of alleged harassment to people in the name of checking influx, a vigilante group looted cash, gold ornaments and other belongings from passengers of a night bus.

The driver of the night super bus (AS-01AC-3349) reported at Byrnihat outpost that on Thursday at around 3 am, unidentified persons, who claimed to be the members of a student’s organisation, stopped his bus at Sumer in Ri-Bhoi and conducted checking of illegal migrants.

“During the drive, they looted the passengers of their belongings including cash and gold ornaments,” the FIR said.

Earlier, on September 7, several passengers faced harassment after the KSU carried out checking of documents from the occupants of the vehicles at Mawryngkneng in East Khasi Hills which had led to the arrest of seven KSU activists. However, they were released later.

It may be added that Chief Secretary WMS Pariat on Wednesday said that no legal sanction had been granted to any NGO to carry out drive against influx or to set up check gates and added that government would not tolerate this. He, however, said that the NGOs can assist the police in checking influx.
