SHILLONG: While expressing concern over the plight of the poultry farmers in the State specially in Ri-Bhoi district, the UDP Youth Wing said that the poultry farmers require a better support from the Government in terms of marketing and financial assistance.

“At present, the poultry farmers do not have any assistance and marketing support from the government’s side”, UDP Youth Wing working president Reyonal Kharkamni said in a memorandum submitted to Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry department on Thursday.

Adding to the woes of the poultry farmers, he said that the feed mills industries are selling the feed at a very high price despite enjoying various benefits from Government in terms of huge transportation subsidies and others.

To improve the plight of the poultry farmers, Kharkamni suggested that the Government should convene a joint meeting between the farmers, the companies and the feed mills industry.

“This would provide the platform to the farmers to air their grievances which they are facing in operating their business,” he said while suggesting that the Government should fix the rate of feeds, chicks and chicken.

“We would also suggest on the need to strengthen the existing feed mills and hatcheries of the Government,” Kharkamni in addition to the point that the Government should set up a Mobile unit to assist the farmers in maintaining the health of the chicken and the farm. He said that they would also like the Government to declare poultry farming as an industry.
