Imphal: Manipur Governor Gurbhachan Jagat on Saturday said Strong Bar Association can effectively bring changes in society. He made this comments while addressing the closing function of the Year Long Diamond Jubilee Celebration of the All Manipur Bar Association held here today at Cheirap court.

The Governor said the legal fraternity is not only there to argue cases in court but it has a far bigger role. The work of this fraternity begins with the introduction of Bills in Parliament, the debates in Parliament and outside the Parliament, the response of various civil societies to certain Acts being proposed or those which have already been passed and finally to actively engage themselves in these discussions in the forums that are available to them.

The Bar Association should be constantly holding Seminars, Workshops and others on subjects of topical importance which impact even the commonman.

They can play an important part and that is in rendering help to poor litigants. There are various rules and regulations regarding admission of BPL students in Schools and Colleges in various professions, in hospitals and others, but these are more often flouted than followed, he added.

Bar Association is one of the strongest institutions in any State and it can be very effective in bringing about a general improvement in many fields, including that of good governance and in fixing accountability and responsibility he said. (UNI)
