Guwahati: The flood situation in four districts of Assam was grim today with the water of the mighty Brahmaputra and its tributaries maintaining a rising trend following incessant rainfall in the catchment areas for the last one week.

An estimated three lakh population have been affected in the districts of Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur and Kamrup by the third wave of floods to hit the state this year which has claimed one life so far, official sources said.

In Dhemaji district the over flowing rivers Chamaong, Gainadi, Jiadhol, Kumotia and Lali hit 340 villages affecting human habitation and cropland, the sources said.

Rain-fed Ranganadi, Rangajan, Dihing, Kakpoi and Tingra rivers had overran their banks flooding 100 villages in Lakhimpur district, they said.

The Jia Bharali in Sonitpur and Puthimari at Rangiya in Kamrup (Rural) was also rising alarmingly and has flooded vast tracts of cropland.

Road communication with Arunachal Pradesh has been disrupted following washing away of a part of National Highway 15 at Rangajan.

Two relief camps have been opened in Dhemaji and the state government has directed the district administration to provide adequate relief to the people in the affected districts, sources added.
