JOWAI: The village authority of Khanduli has alleged that Karbi villagers from Assam illegally trespassed into the village on Saturday and erected some electric poles.

“They came to the village without seeking permission from the Dorbar Shnong and we had to chase them out in order to stop the pole erection work,” the village secretary, I Dkhar, informed on Sunday.

The Dorbar Shnong alleged that some politicians from Karbi-Anglong district of Assam had instigated the villagers to erect the poles at Khanduli. “We suspect that insurgent groups are forcing the Karbi villagers to do the same,” a source from Khanduli added.

Khasi-Pnars and Karbis dwelling in Jaintia Hills and Karbi-Anglong districts of Meghalaya and Assam respectively, had recently, held a public meeting wherein a joint peace committee was constituted to restore normalcy in the area.

Village elders from both the communities had also agreed that there should be no developmental work on either side without the consent of the respective deputy commissioners of the districts apart from the concerned village authorities.
