SHILLONG: The BJP Meghalaya unit has urged the people of the State to support the nationwide bandh called by the BJP-led NDA on Thursday in protest against the Central government’s decision to hike diesel price.

“We urge the Central and State Government employees, business organisation, banks and all educational institutes to extend support to the proposed bandh to pressurise the Central Government to roll back the diesel price,” the party said in a statement issued here on Tuesday.

The statement also sought the support of all non Congress political parties in the State and NGOs towards the bandh since it is an issue that concerns the common man.

The party also urged the shop owners to keep their shutters down and requested commercial vehicle owners and drivers to support the bandh.

Meanwhile, the Nationalist People’s Party (NPP), Meghalaya Unit has also decided to extend support to the proposed ‘Bharat Bandh’.

“We strongly condemn the anti-people policies of the UPA Government and demand the immediate roll back of the price of diesel and restrictions on the normal supply of cooking gas,” State NPP president WR Kharlukhi said.

The Meghalaya Joint Council of Trade Unions and Associations has decided to stage a protest demonstration at the parking lot near the CTO Building at 1.30 pm on the same day.

Meanwhile, the East Khasi Hills Local Taxi Welfare Association has appealed to the public to support the bandh. General secretary of the association, Wandonbok Jyrwa, said, “We are, however, not going to force anyone to participate in the bandh.”
