SHILLONG: The Border Security Force (BSF) on Tuesday said fencing along the Indo-Bangla border is going on at a good pace.

BSF spokesperson Ravi Gandhi informed news persons that the border fencing in the 80-kilometre stretch from Hatimara to Jaliakhola has not yet started due to stiff opposition from the people.

“The State Government is working on it and we are yet to get the clearance for the same,” he said.

Local residents have been opposing the Centre’s decision to erect the border fence from the Zero Line along the Indo-Bangla border in Khasi and Jaintia Hills districts, while demanding fresh survey of the border area before fencing.

Meanwhile, Inspector General, BSF, Suresh Kumar, informed that he has asked the Central Government to raise one more battalion to further improve border management.

He also informed that a BSF delegation would visit Bangladesh later this month to discuss various issues pertaining to border management. He also reiterated that the Bangladeshi Government is making efforts to neutralize North East insurgent groups sheltered in that country.
