Custodial torture evokes tension in Tripura

Agartala: An incident of custodial torture resulting in a serious injury of a tribal youth has evoked tension in Dhalai district of north Tripura on Thursday.

Police though admitted the incident, could not provide any detail and stated that the victim had been in a critical state in Kulai hospital.

According to a report, police picked up the victim identified as Karnaram Reang along with his girl friend Debika Reang from a house under Ganganagar police station area and demanded money for his release on September 17. He was jailed and severely beaten up while in custody. During the alleged torture, one of his eyes got damaged and his kidney received serious injury. The next day, Karnaram was brought to Ganganagar Primary Health Centre (PHC) and was referred to AGMC at critical state on Wednesday. The victim’s family approached the police for conveyance to bring him to Agartala but was allegedly refused. Karna was left without medication for 24 hours which angered the villagers.

Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police (Dhalai) L Darlong admitted the incident and critical state of the victim, saying an inquiry has been started but no report has reached him for the past three days. (UNI)
