SHILLONG: The State Congress has distanced itself from the comments of GNLA chief Champion R Sangma that his cadres would support the Congress in the upcoming Assembly elections except in two seats in Garo Hills.

Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee working president Deborah Marak, who also hails from Garo Hills, on Thursday, said, “I cannot individually give any comments as it was his (Champion’s) individual comments on his way to jail.”

A Congress source said that Champion’s comment has surprised the party and added that the party believed in democratic means of elections without interference from any quarters.

The GNLA leader had also stated that he had asked his cadres not to create any problem during the Assembly elections.

Though there were allegations in the past that militant groups had covertly supported some candidates, this is for the first time that a militant leader is publicly announcing his support to the Congress.
