SHILLONG: The Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya (comprising of Federation of Khasi States, Ka Dorbar Ki Khlieh Nongsynshar Ka Ri Hynniewtrep; Ka Dorbar Ki Dolloi Council of Nokmas) has requested the State Government to allow the council to nominate ten members to the High Level Committee (HLC) on influx.

“We would like to nominate the traditional chiefs from Khasi Hills, Jaintia Hills and Garo Hills to the HLC,” Grand Council of Chiefs chairman John F Kharshiing said in a statement issued here on Thursday.

According to Kharshiing, the names of the some of the members which they would like to nominate are Syiem of Hima Mylliem Latho Manik Syiem, Syiem of Hima Maharam Niandro Syiemiong, Syiem of Hima Khyrim Balajied Syiem, Sirdar of Hima Mawdon Harlinjai Skhemlon and Lyngdoh of Hima Mawphlang NK Lyngdoh.

The ten NGOs also demanded more representation in the committee on influx since the Government has allowed the participation of only a limited number of NGOs. KSU president Daniel Khyriem recently said that all the NGOs should be allowed to take part in the discussion on influx. The KSU had also urged the Government to include the HNYF in the committee.

The terms of reference of the committee is to review the situation of influx in the State and to suggest a multi-pronged approach to deal with the issue
