Imphal: Twenty-two illegal Bangladeshi migrants who entered Manipur for low-cost manual job have been sentenced to two years imprisonment by Chief Judicial Magistrate of Imphal East district (CJMIED), official sources said today.
The order of the CJMIED was passed on Friday after hearing the case filed by Porompat Police station (Imphal East district) of the illegal migrants who were chargesheeted under provisions of Foreigners Act 1946, section 14-A, sources said. Two children, who accompanied the 22 illegal migrants, could not be imprisoned because of being underage and sent to juvenile home, sources said.
The state home department have been instructed to take up proceedings for deportation of the foreigners after completion of their prison term.
Official sources said Manipur police had launched various operations to detect presence of illegal migrants at different places including Hatta in Imphal East district and Lilong in Thoubal district on August 30 following reports of infiltration of illegal migrants.
Police had rounded up 100 illegal migrants from Hatta and Lilong and of these, 22 were were imprisoned by the CJMIED and cases against the rest were pending in the court, sources said.
In another incident, an insurgent of United National Liberation Front (UNLF) has been arrested by police commandos during a search operation at a village in Manipur’s Thoubal district, the police said on Saturday.
Sources said commandos attached to Thoubal police station, launched a search operation at remote Chairen village last evening during which an insurgent of UNLF identified as Laishram Inao alias Meitei Leima Devi (21) was arrested.
The police said Leima Devi on questioning revealed that she was given arms training at an insurgent camp near Tamu in Myanmar and was at present working under the command of self styled Lt Col of the outfit, Chingkheinganbi.
A mobile phone along with some materials was recovered from her possession, the police said adding that she has been handed over to nearby police station for further investigation.
Police sources said that about 100 insurgents of different groups have so far been arrested in Manipur this year. (PTI)
