SHILLONG: State Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Prashant Naik has ruled out the possibilities of any early election in Meghalaya, saying that the election would be held only next year since the final draft of the electoral rolls is expected to be published only in January 2013.
“The speculation about early election in the State is only a rumour. The fact is that the Election Commission (EC) never made any such indication,” Naik informed over telephone after convening a meeting of all the deputy commissioners and sub divisional officers on Saturday to discuss matters related to the Assembly elections due in 2013.
According to the CEO, the summary revision of electoral rolls would start from October 1.
During the summary revision young voters who have attained the age of 18 years till September this year would be enrolled.
“We would also be enrolling young voters who would be attaining the age of 18 from this coming October till the end of December this year during the summary revision,” he said, while adding that all those people who have attained the age of 18 years would be enrolled as far as possible.
Naik informed that he has also instructed the officials to ensure continuous process of including voters’ names in the photo electoral rolls under the Systematic Voter Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) prepared by the Election Commission.
