SHILLONG: Water Resources Minister AL Hek has informed that the expansion work for widening of the road in Nongmynsong is expected to be completed within this coming October.

“At present, 60 percent of the work has already been completed. The remaining 40 percent is expected to be completed within a month time,” Hek informed here on Friday.

The said road’s width, from Lai-lad – Nongmynsong to Nongmynsong Bazar, is being expanded by additional 10.5 meters from its current width of 10 meters. The project, covering a road length of about 1 km, has been sanctioned at a cost of Rs 1 crore.

The necessary land for the expansion work has been acquired from about 50 residents in the area.

A major demolition drive for the first time was also carried out in the area with shops and houses adjacent to the road being demolished.

It may be mentioned that the project also includes beautification of the road.

The road will also in help to decongest the vehicular traffic at Nongmynsong and help save many lives by decreasing the total time taken in ferrying patients to North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS).
