SHILLONG: A special CBI court has recently convicted two people in connection with the Rs 30.90 lakh loan scam at the Punjab National Bank (PNB) in 1988.
CBI special judge Ms B Giri, in her judgement, convicted the senior accountant of the Account General (AG) office, Shillong Jaharlal Das and former director and chairman of M/s Tricon Wood Products (P) Limited, Shillong Dhiresh Kumar Chakraborty in the loan scam.
The case relates to a section of the PNB employees showing undue favour shown to the then director of M/s Tricon Wood Products Limited, Shillong by sanctioning loans and advances on the basis of forged documents to the tune of Rs 30.90 lakh.
Earlier in September 2010, a special CBI court had convicted five people, including a top official of the PNB and sentenced them to two years’ imprisonment in another loan scam worth Rs 69.75 lakh.
A criminal case against them was registered in 1992 while the charge sheet was filed in March 1994 under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
VK Rangacharyulu, the then assistant general manager of PNB, was convicted for showing undue favour to the director of M/s Tricon Hotel Pvt Ltd in Shillong by sanctioning loans and advances amounting to Rs 69.75 lakh on the basis of false documents for the creation of a 3-star hotel in Shillong in 1988.
Rangacharyulu and another PNB employee Hari Narayan Wadhwa were convicted as the key people behind the scam, while Jaharlal Das, the then senior accountant at the office of the Accountant General, Assam, was accused of facilitating the sanction of the loan amount.
Dhiresh Kumar Chakraborty, the then director of M/S Tricon Hotels, and Aparesh Purkayastha of Shillong were also convicted in the case.
