SHILLONG: Sohiong legislator and Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh on Friday attempted to downplay the attempt by five political parties to put up a common candidate against him in the coming Assembly election.
In an emotional address to his supporters at a public meeting at Sohiong on Friday, the legislator said his opponents were trying to hatch a conspiracy to ensure his defeat in the upcoming election.
“The decision of the five political parties to put up a common candidate is not based on genuine grounds. It is a vindictive act by a senior UDP leader who is jealous of my efforts to work for the people of Sohiong constituency,” Lyngdoh said, while alleging that former Sohiong legislator RA Lyngdoh (UDP) was involved in this conspiracy against him.
“The people of Sohiong had given an opportunity to the former UDP legislator to represent the constituency in 1998. But during his tenure as an MLA, he had failed to rise to the expectations of the people. In fact, no developmental programme was initiated during his time,” the senior Congress leader claimed.
“The people then reposed their faith on me by electing me for two consecutive terms,” Lyngdoh said.
Lyngdoh also said he would not have questioned this attempt of putting up a common candidate against him if it was based on his non-performance and failure to work for the overall development of the constituency.
“They have ganged up against me only because they do not like the work I have done for the poor people of my constituency,” he said.
He further said that he would continue to work for the interest of his people and for the overall development of his constituency.
General secretary of Sohiong Block Congress Committee, Kenneth Umdor, also downplayed the proposed plan of a consensus candidate against the Home Minister, saying, “It is an act of desperation of the former UDP legislator which is attempted to create confusion among the people of the constituency.”
