NEW DELHI: With only a few months left for the assembly elections in Meghalaya, Congress president Sonia Gandhi has made it clear that ‘winnability’ factor will be put above everything while selecting the party candidates.
Mrs Gandhi conveyed this to the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president DD Lapang during their meeting here on Monday.
Lapang, who met the Congress president at her residence, submitted a report on the prevailing political scenario in the State.
Mrs Gandhi has convened a meeting of all the important Congress leaders of Meghalaya including the District Congress Committee (DCC) presidents next month in New Delhi, an AICC source told The Shillong Times.
When Lapang pointed out that a large number of women aspirants had applied for the party ticket, she was of the opinion that they were to be encouraged but the winnability factor was to be considered first.
Lapang also met Mrs Gandhi’s political secretary Ahmed Patel, CWC member Oscar Fernandez, and Union Minister Veerappa Moily and other top party leaders.
Meanwhile, the AICC is contemplating to make some changes in the AICC with its General Secretary in-charge Meghalaya, Dr Dhaniram Shandil contesting the upcoming Assembly election in Himachal Pradesh.
Later, Lapang, accompanied by Union Minister of State for Water resources Vincent H Pala and Prestone Tynsong, Minister of Forest, Govt of Meghalaya, met Union Minister of Rural Development Jairam Ramesh.
Ramesh informed the delegation that he would be convening a meeting in mid-November for sanctioning of 21 PMGSY schemes for the State.
