SHILLONG: The KHADC is expected to bring an amendment to the United Khasi and Jaintia Hills District (Establishment of Town Committees) Act, 1960 to pave way for constitution of the town committees outside the municipal areas during the three-day KHADC autumn session which begins on Tuesday.

Sources on Monday informed that the KHADC wanted to bring an amendment to the existing Act for constitution of the town committees in the wake of the State Government’s decision to put on hold the Meghalaya Community Participation Bill.

Sources also informed that the report of the select committee over the proposed amendment of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Appointment and Succession of Syiem, Deputy Syiem, Electors and Rangbah Shnongs of Mylliem Syiemship) Act, 2007 is also expected to be tabled in this session.

“The KHADC Executive Committee wants to bring an amendment to this act to allow prominent businessman Mohindro Rapsang who is seeking a Congress ticket from Shillong West Constituency to contest the upcoming 2013 election,” sources said

Rapsang, who is also the Myntri of Syiem of Mylliem, is still in a spot of bother since the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Appointment and Succession of Syiem, Deputy Syiem, Electors and Rangbah Shnongs of Mylliem Syiemship) Act, 2007 prohibits him from contesting an election unless he resigns as the Myntri.

The KHADC had earlier referred the matter to the select committee following lack of unanimity among the MDCs on the issue.
