SHILLONG: Jail Road Boys’ HS School on Wednesday organised a programme to celebrate the ‘National Year of Mathematics’. The event was supported by a mathematics exhibition that displayed numerous creative models based on basic mathematical principles.
T Lyngdoh, Joint Director, School Education and Literacy, who inaugurated the exhibition, lauded the efforts of the students for putting mathematics into practice.
While appreciating the efforts of the school to organize such an event for the first time, she said that though she was not a mathematician she learnt much from the exhibition.
“I believe that this school will produce many great mathematicians,” she said.
She encouraged the students, who participated in the exhibition from all over the city, to take inspiration from the life of Srinivas Ramanujan whose poor background did not prevent him from becoming great.
As part of the event, an inter-school Quiz competition was held with participants from Government Girls’ HS School, Laban Bengali Boys’ HS School, Laban Bengali Girls’ HS School and Lady Keane HS School, besides the host school.
A presentation on the life history of Ramanujan was delivered by the schools’s Mathematics teacher Rajdeep Adhyapak, followed by popular lecture on mathematics by Dr SS Khare, Professor, Department of Mathematics, NEHU and Prof SK Bhattacharjee, Ex-HOD, Mathematics, St Edmund’s College.
Ex-Teacher, Mathematics, JRBHSS, Ranadhir Kumar Deb also attended the function.
A highlight of the exhibition was an innovative display of a mathematical robot and display of application of mathematics dating back to the time of the ancient Egyptians and Greeks among others.
