Cape Town: Shane Watson’s dream run in the shortest format continued as the all-rounder smashed a quickfire 47 after claiming two wickets as Sydney Sixers beat Highveld Lions by five wickets to enter the semifinals of the Champions League Twenty20 here on Thursday.

But for the second night in row, a CLT20 match had to be called off. Both matches have involved Indian teams, with Mumbai suffering on this occasion, along with opponents Yorkshire.

Mumbai would have felt that they were in a fairly good position after reaching 156-6 in 17.5 overs, in large part thanks to Kieron Pollard’s unbeaten 37 from 20 balls.

With two matches still to go, Mumbai are not out of the competition yet, but a win on Thursday would have put them in a better position as they seek a semifinal spot.

Chasing 138 to win, Sydney Sixers overcame the challenge of spinner Aaron Phangiso (3/14) to reach 141 for five in 19 overs.

Electing to bowl, Sydney did well to stop Highveld Lions to a modest 137 for nine as Mitchell Starc took three wickets for 19 runs.

Both sides had two wins each before coming into this contest and with three wins now, Sydney have a place in the last-four.

Lions will play their last match on Saturday. (PTI)
