Taking strong exception to a news report appearing in The Shillong Times (Oct 19, 2012), ‘Seminar on Khasi language held’, Head of the Khasi Department, Lady Keane College, MS Kharsyntiew has clarified that the programme was purely of an interactive nature.
The clarification stated that on October 18, four Khasi authors interacted with the teachers and students of different colleges on various aspects of Khasi Literature.
“This programme was purely of an interactive nature aimed at benefiting the students and as such had no scope for adoption of any resolution. The news item stating that the said meeting adopted a resolution urging the Centre to constitutionally recognize the Khasi language was as such erroneous and misleading,” Kharsyntiew said.
Principal of Lady Keane College, C Massar, while speaking to The Shillong Times said this was purely an internal meeting and not a seminar as reported.
It may be noted that Dino DG Dympep, secretary general, Meghalaya Peoples’ Human Rights Council, had claimed that he had attended the seminar and that a resolution was adopted at the seminar. He had earlier stated at a press conference on October 17, that 27 countries have pledged their support for the Khasi language at the 21st session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva recently.
