NONGSTOIN: More than ten months after the Nongstoin Town Committee was awarded the work for the construction of the slaughter house in December 2011, the project is yet to materialize. In view of this, the KSU (Nongstoin Circle) had filed an RTI in the month of March to seek information on the project.

The RTI findings have brought out many facts in the open. The estimated cost of the construction was put at Rs 10 lakh which was disbursed in full to the Nongstoin Town Committee came from the MPLADS (Member of Parliament local area development scheme).

However, even when the total amount had been released in January of 2011, the construction of the shed is yet to be completed.

The KSU Nongstoin Circle have pointed out that on December 2, 2011, an order was passed by the Deputy Commissioner (West Khasi Hills) that the implementation of the scheme should be completed within two months.

It may be mentioned that the Nongstoin Town Committee is headed by the Deputy Commissioner himself. Earlier the Nongstoin Town Committee had paced the estimated cost of the slaughter house at Rs 21,39,000/-. The Deputy Commissioner had also said then that Rs 10 lakh was insufficient for the slaughter house construction.

Members of the KSU Nongstoin Circle speaking to The Shillong Times said that if the amount released for the construction of the shed (Rs 10 lakh) was insufficient then why was the construction initiated in the first place.

Rishot Kharbani, general secretary of the KSU Nongstoin Circle said that if the said amount (Rs 10 lakh) was insufficient then the construction of the shed should have been implemented in accordance with the amount.

Davis Goldfield Wanniang, president, KSU Nongstoin Circle made an appeal to the Nongstoin Town Committee to complete the construction of the slaughter house as the entire amount for its construction has been released.

He said that the construction of the slaughter house would benefit the butchers of the town and would also help in maintaining sanitation in the town.
