SHILLONG: Over a hundred members of the Kur Thangkhiew Laikpoh (clan) marched towards the KHADC office to oppose the Council’s decision to de-recognize the clan together with quashing the Sanad (appointment order) of Livingstone Thangkhiew as the Basan (traditional chief) of Nongkseh on Wednesday.

After being phohibited from entering the KHADC premises, the members of the clan were left dejected which led to a huge uproar among in the crowd.

The police along with magistrates had to be rushed to the KHADC office to take stock of the situation.

The situation was brought under control after the KHADC authorities allowed a ten member delegation led by ousted Basan of Nongkseh Livingstone Thangkhiew to enter the premises to meet the Executive Member in charge Elaka Lamphrang Blah who was present with other senior officials.

During the meeting, Thangkhiew said that the members of the clan were disappointed with the decision of the Executive Committee (EC) to issue an interim order quashing his appointment as the Basan of Nongkseh even as derecognizing the clan without citing any reason,

“We are offended since the Council did not give the clan the opportunity to be heard before taking such a major decision,” he said.

While demanding the Council to issue the final order, Thangkhiew also threatened that they would move to the High Court if the Council cannot resolve the issue at the earliest.

While speaking to reporters after the meeting, Executive Member in charge Elaka Lamphrang Blah said that they would have to discuss the issue in the EC since the clan had submitted a representation.

Meanwhile, Thangkhiew Laikpoh Rangbah Kur Asir Shon Thangkhiew has criticized the ousted Basan of Nongkseh for giving misleading statements to the media. While referring to the former Basan of Nongkseh Emerson Thangkhiew, he said that he (Emerson) has been holding the position for the past 49 years and was arbitrarily removed by Syiem of Mylliem Latho Manik Syiem on May 22 this year.

He however said that the political appeal filed by the former Basan of Nongkseh was rightly upheld by the KHADC by setting aside the order of the Syiem Mylliem.

“We are also happy with the decision of the Council to reinstate former Basan of Nongkseh in the same position,” Thangkhiew said.

He also informed that the Dorbar of the Kur Thangkhiew Lai Kpoh has not authorized the Seng Kur Thangkhiew Lai Kpoh to act on behalf of the Kur Thangkhiew Laikpoh and he also warned that any property matter or any Press Release relating to the Kur Thangkhiew Lai Kpoh should come only through the Rangbah Kur.
