SHILLONG: Even after an extension of the deadline issued by the Meghalaya Transport Corporation workers’ union, the management is yet to respond to the demands of releasing fifty per cent arrears and disbursement of the pending salary that is due for the last four months.

The MTCWU had recently agreed to give additional time to the State Government to release the fifty per cent arrears due to them before the Durga Puja celebrations. However, the demand is yet to be addressed till date.

“We have extended the deadlines several times following appeals from the management but it seems that the government is not serious in solving this issue”, an MTCWU member said on Friday.

It may be reminded that the MTCWU had earlier set a deadline of October 5 which was then extended to October 15 for payment of their arrears and the pending salary for four months.

Meanwhile, when contacted, Transport minister AT Mondal said that the government was trying to figure out ways to get the required funds to pay the employees of the MTC.

Meanwhile, the MTCWU has also alleged the present general secretary of the union of double-crossing the union by being involved with the decision of the management.

“Though he claimed that he is our general secretary, yet, he was always on the side of the management and what is surprising to note is that in his 10 years of service as the GS, not even a single general meeting of the union was held”, the source added.

The union has demanded the general secretary to hold a general meeting on or before November 15 failing of which they will be compelled to elect another GS in his place.
