SHILLONG: Outgoing DGP N Ramachandran has admitted that there is a nexus between militants and politicians in the State.
According to him, police department has received inputs on state politicians hobnobbing with militants.
“During investigation it was found that the politicians are maintaining some kind of relations with militants at their individual level,” Ramachandran said while addressing newsmen on his last day in office on Wednesday.
He said some politicians used militants to carry out some of their personal task.
He, however, ruled out possibility of nexus between political parties and militant groups in the State.
Referring to the growing insurgency problem in Garo Hills, he said, “The police are going in the right direction. I hope by next year, normalcy would be restored in Garo Hills”.
The State intelligence and security machinery have been effectively revamped to deal with militancy, he said.
Expressing happiness over improvement in the counter insurgency operations in the State, he said the SWAT team in the State can be compared with any force in the country as far as tackling militancy is concerned. “The SWAT has been providing great support to the CoBRA of the CRPF in counter-insurgency operations in Garo Hills,” he said.
The senior police official said steps were taken to ensure total transparency as far as recruitment of police personnel is concerned.
Stating that the State police would soon be setting up a world class police training centre, he informed that the Centre has sanctioned Rs 50 lakh for the Meghalaya Police Academy.
On the welfare of the police personnel, Ramachandran said lot of things need to be done.
He said the police department is planning to take up various projects to improve the well being of its men in a phased manner.
“Chief Minster Dr Mukul Sangma has already come up with a proposal for construction of housing colony in the town to accommodate the family members of those personnel who are serving in the remote parts of the State,” the outgoing DGP said. He said that they have also recently hike the compensation of those who died in counter insurgency from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 7.5 lakh.
