SHILLONG: Dr AG Ahangar, former head of the Cardiothoracic surgery department of the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) assumed charge as the new Director of the North East Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), sources said on Saturday. Earlier there were allegations that the appointment of Dr Ahangar to Meghalaya was effected by Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad as he is a candidate from his own state. Dr Ahangar, a short listed candidate for Director’s post, was in the news for challenging Director of SKIMS, Prof Showkat Ali Zargar’s appointment in April 2011 in the J&K High Court after questioning the competence and integrity of the members of the Search Committee.
