SHILLONG: Noted Assamese singer and icon Bhupen Hazarika’s last song of his life is out in English and Bengali translation, his younger brother Bolen Hazarika said here on Monday.

Bolen Hazarika, a retired lecturer in a noted college in the city, said that the song had been translated into English by his UK-based brother Probin Hazarika.

The song was yet to be out in the market, but was with the BBC, he said. Bolen led a gathering remembering Bhupen’s life and contributions as fans from all walks of life joined hands in creating a human chain here while singing the famous song on humanity – ‘Manuhe Manuhor Babe’- composed by Bhupen.

The fans of Late Dr. Bhupen Hazarika formed a human chain and took a pledge on Monday at Assam Club in Laban, to keep the much respected singers’ ideals alive.

They have formed Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Literary and Cultural Forum, a new forum to appeal everyone to observe this day in a benefitting manner.

They have pledged to lend a helping hand in prosperity of fellow human beings and in maintaining peace and harmony among all ethnic and religious groups in the region (Shillong) and elsewhere.

Following the pledge everyone sang ‘Manuhe Manuhar Babe’, which means ‘People for people’ as per literal translation in English. The song was written in 1961.

A senior citizen, Dhyan Sharma, present at Assam Club, Laban, shared an anecdote about Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. He said, “Once when Dr. Bhupen Hazarika went to Arunachal he met a village lad who was eagerly waiting for hours to meet him.” He was trying to express that everyone likes songs but for them the creator of the song is like God.

Sharma also made a request to everyone not to distort the song in anyway because each word has of the song has a meaning.
