‘Deteriorated law and order leads to SBI closure’

 SHILLONG: Opposition leader Conrad Sangma on Monday asserted that the deteriorating law and order situation has led to the closure of several branches of the State Band of India in Garo Hills.

Talking to media persons here in the city, Conrad Sangma informed that as many as six branches of the SBI have closed down in Garo Hills due to deteriorating law and order in the district.

Bank branches in Songsak, Samanda, Rongsak Mangsang, Bajengdoba in East Garo Hills and Mindal in North Garo Hills have been closed for several months.

According to Sangma, the closure of banks has led to tremendous hardships on the poor people of the region, as people are dependent on the banks for flagship programmes like the MGNREGS, IAY and other schemes

He also informed that a loft of residents are being tortured while the police is carrying out the operations against the insurgent groups.

“There is one particular case in which a pregnant woman was tortured which led to a miscarriage,” Conrad said.

He also informed that from his own constituency, as many as 8-10 people were picked up while adding that police is too aggressive in their operations.

The Leader of the Opposition also alleged that the human rights are being violated by security forces in the area.

Meanwhile, the Leader of Opposition Conrad Sangma on Monday asked the State Government to immediately clear the pending bills of the contractors of the PWD (roads).

There is a total of over Rs 230 crore as pending bills to be cleared by the Government. The amount of pending bills under plan is Rs 11192.60 lakhs and under non-plan is Rs 11646.39 lakhs.
