SHILLONG: In an extreme punishment in the recent past, a local court has sentenced a murder accused life imprisonment.

It was in 2010 that one Tresen Kharngi killed a person identified as Peter M Sangma at Polo Bazar while he was playing cards with three others after consuming liquor.

All of a sudden, the accused came with an iron rod and hit Sangma three times on his head over some grudge.

Though Sangma was rushed to the Shillong Civil Hospital, he later succumbed to his injuries.

The court of the district and sessions judge B Giri examined as many as 17 witnesses including the doctor and the FSL experts.

Out of the 17 witnesses, 3 were eye witnesses who were playing cards together with the victim. The charge was proved by the prosecution and the Judge subsequently awarded life sentence to the accused under section 302 of IPC. A lawyer dealing with the case said that this was the first life imprisonment after a gap of over six years.
