SHILLONG: Police have foiled a publicity stunt of the proscribed HNLC.
According to sources, some HNLC cadres put up its flag at Madan Student (Student Field), Jaiaw on Tuesday night.
After receiving information, a police team rushed to the spot and seized the flag.
“By putting this flag, the HNLC wanted to gain publicity,” East Khasi Hills SP M Kharkrang said on Wednesday.
Stating that the police would not allow the HNLC to raise its ugly head in the district, he said the flag was put up at around 12.30 am on Tuesday.
According to him, the supporters were planning to call the media in the morning to show that the flag of the outfit was flying high.
“But sadly the police managed to seized the flag at around 2.30 am,” he said.
Earlier on August 14, police managed to defuse a grenade planted underneath a flag pole of the HNLC at Phot Ja-ud village, about 28 km from Mawkyrwat in South West Khasi Hills district. The grenade was concealed near the flag pole on which the outfit unfurled its flag to mark its 25th raising day.The outfit also put up a sign board at the site warning local people not to pull down the flag or dismantle the signboard.
