SHILLONG: In a bizarre incident two rival politicians from Pynthorumkhrah – PT Sawkmie and AL Hek – on Thursday turned a simple school function into a political battlefield when they shared the same platform.

St Xavier’s Secondary School, Polo, which was celebrating its Silver Jubilee on Thursday, had invited the two politicians to the function, not knowing that the two political rivals would ‘misuse’ the invitation to score some brownie points against each other.

Sawkmie, while addressing the gathering, took the opportunity to launch himself as the ‘most suitable’ candidate from Pynthorumkhrah constituency for the 2013 Assembly polls.

He also took a dig at the sitting MLA (Hek), stated that in the illustrious 25-year history of the school, the government has not provided any support for the development of the school.

He stated that each MLA gets Rs 1 crore for constituency development every year, which is meant for developing school, roads, community service and others.

Sawkmie even went to the extent of promising jobs to all the students passing out from the school.

In his defense, Hek told the gathering that he has been contributing a lot to the school over the years in the form of books, school uniforms, computers, trophies and others.

Reacting sharply to Sawkmie’s statement against him, Hek said, “Some people have peculiar attitude. When the elephant is still in the wild, they already trade off its ivory.”

He also asserted that the people of Pynthorumkhrah will not be swayed by mere promises.
