BSF-BGB agree to plan to protect people along border

Agartala: The Border Security Force and its Bangladeshi counterpart, Border Guards of Bangladesh (BGB) have agreed to go for a comprehensive plan to secure the life of the population along the Indo-Bangla border.

Referring to border co-ordination meeting between IG BSF (NE Region) and DIG BGB at Sylhet in Bangladesh since last week, a senior BSF official said here both the forces had agreed for greater cooperation, understanding and synergy between them.

The meeting had discussed bilateral issues of mutual concern, especially those relating to trans-border criminal activities of insurgent groups, incidents of armed attacks on the BSF jawans by Bangladeshi criminals while BGB had also reportedly raised some specific issues of atrocities on Bangladeshi nationals.

“The issue of reported hideouts of anti-Indian forces in Bangladesh have also been taken up by the BSF at the meeting and it asked for appropriate action against cross-border movement of militants besides, movements of arms,” the official stated.

The meeting, however, stressed a joint survey of unfenced patches, smuggling of fake Indian currency note besides repair works to protect embankments of rivers, infiltration, drugs, arms smuggling and smuggling of forest produce and cattle.

IG BSF Sudesh Kumar, Meghalaya Frontier, led a 20-member Indian team while his counterpart in BGB DIG Brig Gen Abu Sayeed Khan led the 14-member Bangladeshi team in the threeday meeting that ended on Nov 8.

The BGB vowed to intensify vigil along the border areas while assuring to take up the related issues with ministries concerned. On its part, BSF also ensured to take up various issues with the government after the meeting.

The BSF delegation comprised senior officials of the Home Ministry and Narcotics Control Bureau, IGs of Meghalaya, Assam, Tripura and Mizoram. (UNI)
