Editor,

The result of the written examination for the post of Lower Division Assistants under the Heads of Department held on 20th October, 2012 was declared on 19th November, 2012. With lots of criticisms about the credibility of the MPSC, anomalies are detected in the current results as well. I don’t intend to defame or tarnish the reputation of the qualified candidates, but this letter is to draw attention to the unusual nature of the results. The following example will illustrate how strange the results are. Out of more than 400 candidates called for the personal interviews, it is very unusual that 21 Roll Nos have appeared serially or consecutively. These Roll Nos. are (265, 266), (3656,3657), (5053,5054), (5584,5585), (9978,9979,9980), (11685,11686), (15473,15474), (19382,19383), (24121,24122), (24125,24126). Out of more than 30,000 applicants with unique Roll Nos assigned to each candidate, it is impossible for the above-mentioned Roll Nos to follow in sequential order until and unless there is careless invigilation by the concerned invigilators. These anomalies do not take place in various examinations conducted by UPSC, SSC, MHA, etc. It’s a matter of surprise as to how out of such a cloud of candidates, the pairing formula is still observed in the semi grand finale. The result clearly portrays the freedom of exchanging answers within the examination halls especially for those candidates who happen to share the same seats. I think, if honestly complying with the rules and regulations as stated in the admit card, the above pairs would not have been observed.

Ampareen’s press briefing holds no water

Editor,

The newspaper is our only source of information and we don’t know if the recent leak on the Education scam is a selective leak and who leaked it. I wish to thank Kong Patricia Mukhim who brought these things to light ( ST. Nov 16, 2012). If CSWO had no ulterior motive they should have put the whole document before the media and let them judge its merits. But to a large extent what CSWO has done is right. If it was not for them we would have still been in the dark and those poor candidates would still be hoping against hope.

I also strongly feel that Ampareen Lyngdoh ( Education minister then) should own responsibility for what had happened instead of calling a press briefing and then putting the blame on someone else. This has done more harm than good. We cannot accept that the tampering was done by JD Sangma alone without her direction. JD Sangma is a bureaucrat. He will not do anything by himself without the ordination from his boss.

The worst part is that Ampareen is blaming her detractors. Who are those detractors other than those aggrieved candidates? All Indian politicians have the monopoly to blame others when they are caught. I will not be surprised if Ampareen blames the Inter Service Intelligence (ISI) of Pakistan for the leak or for that matter put the blame on some anti- national element who wants to destabilise our economy ( or the governance). Like what Phrangsngi Pyrtuh has said in his article (ST 21 Nov 2012 ) activists too are rubbing shoulders with money politics which is hand in gloves with the mafia (s) ( Coal Mafia, Toll Gate mafia, Cement companies mafia ) and what not. If what Kong Patricia Mukhim has stated in her article (ST Nov 23, 2012) that the original score sheets of all the candidates in different districts were tampered upon ( I think at the district level) and that the original score sheets of only the Shillong candidates is available with CBI, then it makes sense to scrap that entire examination.

My message to the marginalized (affected) youth with no one to help (except the honourable High Court) is to appeal to the Court to declare the entire selection result null and void, and all those aspirants who last appeared should be allowed to appear again irrespective of their age ( some candidates might have crossed the age limit). But they should also appeal to the Court that this case should not be dropped.

Who owns Soso Tham auditorium?

 Editor,

There is only one public auditorium in the State – the Soso Tham Auditorium which has been closed to the public month’s for renovation thereby leaving most of the cultural activities to be held elsewhere. Renovation was indeed the need for the oldest auditorium of the State, however it is surprising to learn that the auditorium will not be available for public use until the elections are over as it will be occupied by the Election Department. This will leave most of the events scheduled to be held at the auditorium after its make-up, in a quandary. It leaves the public at large wondering why the auditorium complex is not spared by the government officials when there are many unused government properties such as the indoor stadium at Polo Grounds or the Multi- convention center and many others, for smooth conduct of the elections. As the auditorium is the only suited place for most cultural and literary events, the Arts & Culture Dept should make the complex available for such events only. In a state where tourism and sports are duly promoted by the Government, opportunity should also be given to cultural activities to roll on smoothly at the only available complex and auditorium, as this is also another sector that needs attention. As the city lacks amusement facilities, Government can at least spare the Soso Tham Auditorium. Is it not a shame that people of Shillong are now compelled to use the auditorium at the Aurobindo Institute of Indian Culture for all concerts and events as it is the only space available?

Roadside as urinal

Editor

I want to bring to the notice of all the people of Shillong that the road side is no a urinal. Why can’t men use washrooms or toilets instead of shamelessly urinating by the roadside. It’s sickening to cross such stinking places. One place I have to cross every day is Anjalee petrol pump. Its really disgusting! Its time for those wof us who are concerned to take pictures of these shameless men and for the newspapers to publish them. Unless men are shamed or fined for committing nuisance they will not learn a lesson. Let’s make Shillong a cleaner place to stay.
