SHILLONG: National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) chairperson Shanta Sinha has stated that the State Government should constitute the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights to be able to contain the growing cases of sexual harassment of women, especially minor girls.

Sexual harassment of women particularly minors seemed to have become the order of the day in the State as many complaints of rape cases have been lodged in the State in the past few months.

The latest rape case was reported from Khliehriat when one Chos Pale (37) raped his minor daughter (15) in a vehicle at Thadladaw in East Jaintia Hills.

Earlier on November 9, one Peterwel Paliar had raped his minor daughter at Lawsiej village in South West Khasi Hills.

Recently, a complaint was lodged at Laban PS that one Khambor Nongbet allegedly raped her daughter at Pomsanngut village in East khasi Hills.

Talking to The Shillong Times over phone, Sinha said that the Commission has responded to those cases of rape which have been brought to its notice.

Reacting to a query, she said that the State Government must come out with a policy on children which would take care of the various issues confronting the welfare of children.

She said that during the recent visits to the state, NCPCR had raised the issue of minor labourers working in coal mines, sexual harassment of girls, besides the implementation of the RTE Act. She, however, mentioned that the State Government has initiated action on these issues.
