Gandhinagar: A total of 1,374 nominations were filed for 95 seats in the second phase of polling for Gujarat assembly elections, scheduled to be held on December 17, according to Election Commission officials.

Nine hundred and twelve nominations were filed within five hours on Friday, the last day for the filing of papers for the second phase.

BJP, Congress, NCP, BSP, SP, JD (U) and the GPP have fielded their candidates.

Chief Minister Narendra Modi and several other leaders of major political parties filed their nominations yesterday.

The picture will be clear on December 3, the last date for the withdrawal of the nominations.

The process of filing of nominations for the second phase witnessed high voltage drama and suspense on Friday with several leaders who were denied tickets threatening to switch loyalty or decided to jump into the fray as independents.

The denial of a ticket to Congress leader Narhari Amin and subsequent high drama dominated the electoral politics yesterday. The speculations were rife that Mr Amin was considering to join BJP.

Even after persuasion by senior leaders of the party, he refused to budge from his resolve not to work for the party. (UNI)
