SHILLONG: A bi-monthly law journal entitled ‘Meghalaya Judgments’ was on Wednesday released by Deputy Chief Minister in charge Law, BM Lanong, at the Shillong Bar Association.
Compiled and published by Additional Advocate General Dr BP Todi, this journal aims to provide information to young advocates on the latest judgments by any court -ranging from the Supreme Court to the district council courts – and giving them a chance to scan through the proceedings and verdicts of the court.
Todi, who had also compiled the North East journal and is a pioneer of the Guwahati Law Report, said the Meghalaya Judgment will incorporate only recordable and important court cases besides providing the Supreme Court judgments in the nutshell.
Lanong said this effort will go a long way in helping people to have access to law-related information.
“This journal will definitely enrich and simplify the understanding of issues related to the Supreme Court and high court judgements including the district council courts,” Lanong said while calling upon the young advocates to update themselves with all the reports and judgment through the journal.
The Law minister expressed surprise over the fact that district council courts dole out excuses for not providing the courts judgement citing technical snags.
“The district court has long been computerized and it’s surprising to learn about the excuse,” he said, while adding that the unavailability of the courts judgement will cripple the understanding process.
Informing about the government’s intentions to provide easy access to judgement especially to the rural populace, Lanong said the government is contemplating to activate and reactivate the lower local courts to address their legal problems.
Senior advocate GS Massar, while lauding the efforts of the author, said, “The journal will help improve the knowledge of law and its applicability in the context of Meghalaya.”
